KAMPALA, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan military on Monday announced a new commander for the African Union (AU) Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) contingent.

The military said in a statement issued in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, that Sam Kavuma will replace Samuel Okiding, who has been appointed as Uganda's new deputy chief of defense forces. Okiding has been the ATMIS force commander since May 17, 2023.

This came after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni made several changes in the country's military, including the appointment of his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the chief of defense forces.

Uganda is one of the troop-contributing countries to the ATMIS battling militants in Somalia. Others are Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

The ATMIS was created when the African Union, jointly with the Somali government, reconfigured the AU Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). Following the reconfiguration, the ATMIS became operational on April 1, 2022, effectively replacing the AMISOM. Enditem
