BARCELONA, Spain, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Language service, drought management and green transition are the priority fields of study for artificial intelligence (AI) researchers in Spain, an industry insider said on Monday.

The use of AI in linguistic communication is a key area of research in Spain, Carles Sierra, director of the AI research institute of the Spanish National Research Council, told Xinhua in an interview.

Sierra said researchers are working on language models and innovative technologies, hoping to create intelligent devices.

On the other hand, AI also has a role to play in finding solutions to environmental issues, including tackling the drought that has plagued Spain for three years and helping the country achieve its green energy transition goals, he said.

Sierra said he is optimistic about the future of AI in Spain, a country that is increasingly attracting public funding for "a multitude of projects to help companies adopt this technology."

Implementing AI will create 1.6 million jobs in Spain in the next 10 years, Randstad, a human resource consulting firm, estimated in a study published in February. However, it said some 400,000 jobs could be cut in areas such as retail, hospitality and administration.

People are at the heart of the AI revolution, Sierra said, adding that the capacity to cultivate new talent is most important in pushing for progress in this field. Enditem
