TEHRAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- A member of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed in airstrikes in Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour early Tuesday, Iranian semi-official Fars news agency reported.
The serviceman, identified as Behrouz Vahedi, was one of the members of the IRGC's Quds Force, who was serving as a "military adviser" in Syria, the report said.
Iranian military advisers have been working in Syria at the invitation of Damascus to help the country "fight terrorism and help establish peace," it added.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a series of explosions rattled Syria's Deir al-Zour early Tuesday, coinciding with the presence of unidentified drones flying overhead.
It said the blasts were accompanied by intensified airstrikes targeting military installations belonging to the "Syrian army and Iranian-backed" forces in several cities, including al-Bukamal, al-Mayadeen, and the eponymous provincial capital of Deir al-Zour.
The Britain-based watchdog group added that it was unable to verify the entity responsible for the airstrikes, suggesting that they were possibly conducted by the U.S. military with possible involvement of Israel. Enditem
