LISBON, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Deputy of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco was elected president of the Portuguese Assembly on Wednesday.

After three failed attempts to select a speaker on Tuesday, the Socialist Party (PS) and PSD, the parties with the most elected deputies in the election held on March 10, reached an agreement to share the leadership of the Portuguese parliament.

On Wednesday during the fourth round of votes, Aguiar-Branco won 160 votes in the 230-seat parliament.

The rules of the Portuguese Assembly determine that the parliamentary speaker is elected at the first plenary meeting of the legislature by an absolute majority.

Aguiar-Branco is a lawyer and has previously served as minister of justice and minister of national defense. Enditem
