BAGHDAD, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi military said Thursday that the security forces killed a senior member of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group in an operation near the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Acting on intelligence reports, the security forces carried out an operation in a desert area in western Iraq that resulted in the killing of Samir Khedr Sheehan al-Namrawi, who was responsible for transporting fighters, weapons, equipment, and explosives between Iraq and Syria, according to a statement issued by the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

A security source speaking on condition of anonymity told Xinhua that al-Namrawi is one of the dangerous leaders of the IS organization, who was wanted for committing multiple terrorist crimes.

The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. Enditem
