NAIROBI, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Kenya has launched a motorsport academy to help promote early identification of sports talents across the country.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who launched the Talanta Motorsport Academy in Nairobi on Wednesday, said the facility will also be used for training of sports technical and administration personnel, as well as conducting sports research.

Gachagua said the initiative will offer sustainable growth of sports talents among the youth, adding that the government is on course in its plan to place sports as a top income earner, and the launch of the academy will elevate Kenya's stature and command of the toughest motorsport in Africa and the globe.

He called on investors to work with the government in investing in the motorsport industry and expand sporting opportunities for youth.

Gachagua said the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya will promote the country's tourism sector and boost the hospitality industry.

He said the WRC Safari Rally, which got underway on Thursday, will market tourism sites to foreign visitors to watch the rally, and asked the rally enthusiasts to visit other tourist sites such as coastal beaches and wildlife parks.

"Once you are done with the WRC Safari Rally, sample the best of what our tourism sector offers such as our wildlife, our exotic beaches at the coastline and dance to our African music," he said.

Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife indicate that Kenya's international tourists increased to 1.75 million in 2023, up from 1.48 million recorded in 2022, with earnings also surging to 333.8 billion shillings (about 2.5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2023. Enditem
