NEW DELHI, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A woman and her three children were killed after a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder exploded Saturday inside their house in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The incident took place in Dumri village of Bhaluani area in Deoria district, about 333 km east of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"In an unfortunate incident today, a 42-year-old woman and her three minor children -- two daughters and a son -- were killed after a cooking gas cylinder exploded inside their house at around 4:00 a.m. (local time) in Dumri village," a police official said. "We are being told the woman was preparing tea on the gas stove for her husband when the cylinder exploded."

Following the incident, authorities rushed fire department officials and police teams to the spot.

The bodies have been recovered from the house and sent for post-mortem. Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the incident.

Chances of fire in Indian houses are often high as owners usually ignore safety standards vis-a-vis fire and store fuel and combustible materials in a haphazard manner. Enditem
