LOS ANGELES, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Two people died in a small plane crash near an airport in the U.S. state of California on Saturday, authorities said.

The single engine TBM aircraft N960LP crashed near Glenshire Dr, in Truckee, a small mountain town in northern California, while attempting to land at Truckee Tahoe Airport at 6:38 p.m. local time (0138 GMT Sunday), according to a statement released by the airport.

"There are two known fatalities. It is not known yet how many people were onboard," said the statement, adding that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the accident on Sunday.

Truckee Police Department said in an earlier statement that police officers and fire personnel were working on the crash spot and at the time there was no threat to any structures and no road closures. Enditem
