TOKYO, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower on Friday tracking losses on the overnight U.S. market amid cautious market sentiments.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, went down by 781.06 points, or 1.96 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 38,992.08.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 29.38 points, or 1.08 percent, higher at 2,702.62.
Market watchers here noted selling dominated the Tokyo market as investors took profit-taking moves following declines in major stock indexes of the U.S. stock market, while the yen's slight appreciation against the dollar in the forex market also weighed on the Nikkei index.
On the Prime Market, decliners were led by precision instrument, electric appliance and securities issues.
Issues that declined outpaced those that advanced by 1,026 to 566, while 60 ended the day unchanged. Enditem
