DAR ES SALAAM, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Vice President Philip Mpango on Saturday urged women leaders from the global south to articulate their challenges and exchange ideas on how best to tackle global critical health challenges.

Mpango made the remarks while opening a three-day WomenLift Health Global Conference, a catalyst for gender equity in global health leadership, in the port city of Dar es Salaam.

Women constitute a higher percentage of the total workforce in the health sector, global reports estimate that only 25 percent of senior and 5 percent of top leadership positions are held by women, he added.

"In this regard, I call upon women leaders from the global south to use this platform to articulate their challenges and exchange ideas on how best WomenLift Health Global may be of help," he told 800 delegates from 41 countries.

WomenLift Health Global has canvassed and united a wide range of multidisciplinary health leaders worldwide to champion women's leadership in global health and promote gender equality, realizing that women's leadership and priorities are critical to finding new ways and innovative solutions to current global challenges because women are the most affected.
