NEW DELHI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Two medical students have tested positive for cholera in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, officials said Sunday.

The students from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) girls' hostel were among the 47 students who were hospitalized on Friday evening after they complained of loose stools and dehydration.

Following the detection of cases, the local government has sounded an alert and asked officials to take necessary precautions to ensure the infection is not spread to more people.

The management has closed the BMCRI hostel kitchen and carried out its disinfection.

Officials said of the 47 students, 21 were discharged from the hospital on Saturday evening after being treated.

According to Karnataka health and family welfare department, since the beginning of the year, six confirmed cases of cholera have been reported, of which five were recorded last month. Enditem
