JERUSALEM, April 8 (Xinhua) -- A report on the Israeli water sector, published on Sunday, stated that the extent of pumped water loss in Israel has gradually decreased from 20 percent to 7 percent in the past two decades.

The report, authored by the Arad Group, a leading global water measurement company, and submitted to Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen, noted that water loss volume in Israel is one of the lowest in the world, compared to a global annual average of 30 percent, mainly due to pipeline leaks.

According to the report, the decrease in Israel is primarily due to the installation of smart water meters, which currently cover more than 60 percent of Israeli households.

The report stated that in 2023, there were about 204,000 leakage incidents in Israeli household smart meters, which is 18.5 percent of the total 1.1 million smart meters currently installed.

The replacement of all water meters in Israel with smart meters is expected to be completed by 2026 and result in annual savings of 100 million shekels (26.86 million U.S. dollars) for consumers, according to the report.

It also showed that annual water consumption in Israel is more than 2.5 billion cubic meters (bcm). Still, nature only provides the country with an average of 1.1 bcm of water available for pumping every year, which means Israel manages to "produce" about 1.5 bcm of water per year by desalinating seawater, purifying sewage, and using brackish water.

Israel's Energy Minister Eli Cohen said that the report's data further proves Israel's status as a leading water power, adding that the country will invest 10 billion shekels in the next two years to develop the water infrastructure. Enditem
