NEW DELHI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Seven Nepalese nationals and a local driver were killed after a pickup van carrying them skidded off the mountainous road and fell into a 150-metre-deep gorge in northern India, police said Tuesday.

Two more Nepalese nationals were critically injured in the late Monday accident.

According to police, a State Disaster Response Force team rushed to the spot and retrieved bodies from the gorge with the help of locals and policemen. The rescue team also sent the injured to a hospital.

The ill-fated vehicle was heading to Nepal to take the passengers home.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. Around 150,000 people are killed every year in about half a million road accidents across India. Enditem
