HANOI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Power consumption in Vietnam this summer is expected to increase by 13 percent year-on-year between May and July, 9.6 percent higher than forecast, VnExpress reported Tuesday, citing the National Load Dispatch Center.

Nguyen Quoc Trung, the center's deputy director, said this was because the weather is expected to become hot sooner than normal, and this could cause pressure on supply, especially in the north.

Between April and July this year peak demand in the region might reach 27,500 MW, up 17 percent year-on-year, while production would only rise 10 percent, he said.

To ensure power supply, the center has stored water in dams. There are currently 11 billion cubic meters, up 2.7 times from a year earlier.

According to the center, in the first three months of 2024, Vietnam's average electricity consumption stood at 762 million kWh per day.

In 2023, the country's highest electricity demand in a day surged to 940 million kWh. Enditem
