MOSCOW, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Russia and Europe currently lack dialogue on strategic stability and need to develop new regimes, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday on Türkiye's recent suspension of a multilateral arms control pact.
"The situation is changing ... and this is most likely caused by the overall degradation of the security system in Europe," Peskov said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed a decree to suspend the implementation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE).
Originally signed in 1990 by then NATO members and six Warsaw Treaty states, the CFE was aimed at establishing a balance between the two military alliances by setting limits on the quantities of weapons and military equipment that all parties were allowed to amass.
Russia suspended the treaty in 2007 and formally withdrew in November 2023.
The CFE has largely "lost its viability" because of the changing geopolitical situation, said Peskov.
The current situation requires the resumption of joint dialogue to "develop new regimes" and forge a new common perspective on security and strategic stability, he said. Enditem
