SEOUL, April 11 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export rose in double digits in the first 10 days of this month on the back of strong demand for locally-made semiconductors and automobiles, customs office data showed Thursday.

Export came to 16.44 billion U.S. dollars in the April 1-10 period, up 21.6 percent compared to the same period of last year, according to Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export increased 13.5 percent in the 10-day period. The monthly outbound shipment kept growing for the sixth straight month through March.

Semiconductor export jumped 45.5 percent to 2.57 billion dollars, and automotive shipment expanded 8.6 percent to 1.64 billion dollars.

Shipment for oil products, steel, auto parts, mobile devices, precision machinery, home appliances and computers all advanced in double figures in the 10-day period.

Import gained 5.8 percent from a year earlier to 18.43 billion dollars in the first 10 days of April, sending the trade deficit to 1.99 billion dollars. Enditem
