DHAKA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi people on Thursday celebrated Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month-long fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.

Since Thursday morning, Muslims in capital Dhaka flocked to open places and masjids to offer special Eid prayers.

Long lines of worshippers had been seen since Eid day morning in front of Dhaka's many masjids, including the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The main Eid congregation in the capital was held at the national Eidgah (an open ground for Eid prayers). Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin, government officials, politicians, and other representatives participated in the prayer at the national Eidgah.

On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Bangladeshi president extended his sincere greetings to all Bangladeshis living in the country and abroad.

Also, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina exchanged Eid greetings with a diverse group of citizens including party leaders, workers, judges, and foreign diplomats.

TV channels running special programs showed gorgeous Eid celebrations in places outside the capital city.

The country's largest Eid congregation was held widely at Sholakia in Kishoreganj district, some 117 km northeast of Dhaka, with hundreds of thousands of participants offering prayers.

Worshippers were seen shaking hands and doing the customary hugging after the prayers.

Security was beefed up in the country to avoid any untoward situation during the festival, which is celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Enditem
