KABUL, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Two children lost their lives and three others were injured in the blasts of unexploded ordnances left over from past wars in two provinces of Afghanistan, local officials said Tuesday.

One child was killed and two others were injured after two unexploded ordnances separately exploded in Spin Boldak and Arghistan districts of southern Kandahar province, Spokesman for provincial police Mullah Asadullah Jamshidi said.

The third incident of its kind happened after an innocent youngster found a device in Baharak district, northern Badakhshan province, and began playing with it, but the device exploded, killing the child on the spot and injuring his grandfather who accompanied the ill-fated teenager, spokesperson for provincial police Ehsanullah Kamgar said.

Afghanistan reportedly is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world as the unexploded devices and mines have been left over from more than four decades of wars and civil strife in the past. Enditem
