ABUJA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian army said on Tuesday that its troops recently killed at least 12 suspected terrorists during a raid on a camp in the northern state of Zamfara.

The terrorists' camp was destroyed during the raid in the Maru local government area of Zamfara, which has been identified as one of the hotbeds of terrorism and banditry in the northern region of the country, Onyema Nwachukwu, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, said in a statement.

Nwachukwu did not specify when exactly the raid took place, but said the clearance operation followed "credible intelligence ... to dismantle the suspected terrorists' operational base in Maru."

The troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, forcing some of them to flee due to the superior firepower of the gallant soldiers, he said, noting that 10 operational motorcycles used by the criminal gang for mobility and 18 rustled cows were recovered after the dislodgement.

"The successful operation is a testimony to the commitment of our troops in the fight against terrorism and insurgency," Nwachukwu added. Enditem
