JAKARTA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Defense Ministry has officially signed a contract to procure two European multi-mission frigates from Italy.

"This is part of the modernization of strategic defense equipment to safeguard state sovereignty and make a significant contribution to regional security and stability," the ministry said in a written statement on Wednesday.

The Italian shipbuilding company, Fincantieri S.p.A., is currently building both ships at its shipyard.

The first ship is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia in October 2024 and the second ship in April 2025.

Measuring 143 meters long and 16.5 meters wide, this type of multi-purpose offshore patrol vessel is armed with an Aster 15 surface-to-air missile system and Sylver A43 vertical launcher. Enditem
