DOHA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Wednesday that Qatar is reassessing its role as a mediator between Israel and Hamas.

He made the remarks during a joint press conference with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, saying the mediation has been exploited by some politicians concerned only with narrow political interests, causing harm to Qatar.

For his part, Fidan said that Israel's "violence and oppression" of Palestinian people is the root cause of the problem in the region.

Earlier in the day, at a meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the Qatari prime minister said that "the (Middle East) region is going through sensitive conditions."

He also called on the international community to take responsibility for halting the conflict in Gaza and highlighted the importance of refraining from using humanitarian aid as a tool for political leverage. Enditem
