Promising Spanish gymnast dies of meningitis aged just 17

MADRID, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Spanish gymnast Maria Herranz has died suddenly at the age of 17 after suffering from meningitis, the Spanish Gymnastics Federation (RFEG) confirmed on Friday.

The local authority in Herranz's hometown of Cabanillas del Campo also confirmed the news with a communique which explained, "Maris has left us suddenly due to a terrible meningitis, which took her in just 24 hours, leaving an inconsolable sadness in the locality."

Herranz was an up-and-coming gymnast, who recently represented Spain in the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships, held in Birmingham (UK) in November 2023, finishing in 26th place.

The RFEG also published their condolences writing, "at the RFEG we deeply lament the death of Maria Herranz, a gymnast from Club Ruditramp, who represented us in the last Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships. We send our deepest sympathy to her family and friends and Spanish gymnastics will always remember you." Enditem
