NEW DELHI, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Police departments in India's various states have recently introduced air-conditioned helmets for their traffic personnel deployed on the roads amid the prevailing heat wave.

The helmets are designed to bring a cooling effect during the soaring temperatures beyond 40 degrees Celsius and have visors to shield the eyes from sunlight, officials said.

The helmets were introduced in Gujarat following the reports of traffic policemen fainting on the road due to sweltering heat.

The helmet operates with a battery that is fitted at the waist. It has a charging point and lasts up to eight hours on a full charge.

Earlier this month, India Meteorological Department said the country would face extreme heat from April to June with the central and western peninsular regions anticipated to be the worst affected. Enditem
