RIO DE JANEIRO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Argentine Luis Zubeldia has been appointed manager of Sao Paulo on a deal that runs until December 2025, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Saturday.

Zubeldia replaces Thiago Carpini, who was sacked on Thursday after the team's poor start to Brazil's domestic season.

"I am very confident about taking on this new challenge," Zubeldia said in comments published on Sao Paulo's official website.

"The objectives of Sao Paulo coincide with my own. I hope to bring a lot of success to Sao Paulo and be a part of the club's prestigious history."

Zubeldia, a former midfielder whose playing career ended at 23 because of knee problems, has previously had spells in charge of 10 different clubs in six countries over a managerial career spanning more than 15 years.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since parting ways with Ecuador's LDU Quito late last year.

Sao Paulo is currently 18th in the 20-team Brazilian top-flight standings with two losses from their first two games of the season.

In the Copa Libertadores - South America's premier club competition - Sao Paulo is second in Group B with one win and one loss from two matches. Enditem
