KABUL, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan has resumed the export of goods to Türkiye via the Herat-Khaf railway linking the country's western port to Iran following a pause of five years, local TV channel TOLOnews reported Saturday.

"For a period of one month, one train will travel daily from Afghanistan to Iran and vice versa," Mohammad Naseem Mohammadi, head of the Herat railway authorities, told the local media.

"After a month due to the increase in traders' goods, two trains will operate daily, and passenger services are also planned for the future," he said.

In the first shipment, 1,100 tonnes of talc stone was exported from western Herat province to Bilecik of Türkiye, Mohammadi said.

The 225-km-long cross-border Herat-Khaf railway is a major trade railway that connects west Afghanistan's Herat province to neighboring Iran onward to Türkiye and Europe, while the railway linking Uzbekistan to north Afghanistan's Hairatan port plays a role in the transit of commercial goods from Central Asia to the landlocked country.
