COLOMBO, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The headline inflation in Sri Lanka fell to 2.5 percent in March from 5.1 percent in February as calculated by the consumer price index, the Department of Census and Statistics said on Monday.

The department said food inflation remained unchanged at 5 percent in the past two months whereas inflation in the non-food category dropped from 5.1 percent in February to 0.7 percent in March.

Sri Lanka's inflation has been easing steadily since September 2022 when the inflation was at 69.8 percent, showed the official data.

The central bank said earlier the South Asian country's inflation is expected to gradually stabilize at the targeted level of 5 percent over the medium term, following a short-lived acceleration of inflation in the near term on account of recent tax adjustments and supply-side disruptions. Enditem
