MOGADISHU, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A senior United Nations envoy to Somalia on Monday expressed confidence in the ongoing stabilization efforts.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia and Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia, Catriona Laing, said she will continue supporting and advocating for Somalia going forward, even as her term comes to an end soon.

In a statement issued in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, Laing said she has full confidence that Somalia will succeed and that the African Union and the UN, along with other international partners, will continue to play a crucial role in supporting Somalis on their path to peace and stability.

"For me, Somalia is a place of hope and friendship, and I will continue to support and advocate for Somalia wherever I am," said Laing, whose one-year assignment ends in May 2024.

The global body is working with the Somali authorities to develop a realistic plan to ensure that the momentum toward "one person, one vote" is maintained.

As of February 2024, the UN welcomed the Somali parliament's approval of the procedural rules for constitutional changes. However, defeating al-Shabab remains a top priority for the internationally-backed government, with the authorities now preparing to resume large-scale operations soon. Enditem
