BERLIN, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Germany announced on Wednesday that it will soon resume cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

"In resuming our acute cooperation, we support UNRWA's vital and irreplaceable role in meeting the basic needs of the people in Gaza," reads a joint statement by the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The decision follows the publication of an independent investigation concerning UNRWA, led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna.

In January, the organization was rocked by Israel's accusations that UNRWA employees were involved in the Oct. 7 attacks in southern Israel, carried out by Hamas. This led to some countries including Germany halting their contributions.

On Tuesday, German Development Minister Svenja Schulze met with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa in Ramallah to launch an initiative for employment and stability. Enditem
