GAZA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said Wednesday that it is seeking 1.2 billion U.S. dollars for its operations in the Palestinian territories.

UNRWA said in a press statement sent to Xinhua that it is seeking 1.21 billion to deal with the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and to respond to the needs in the West Bank as "violence" increases.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said it is of utmost importance to support the agency in providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and development services in the fields of health and education, noting that the past months have proven that UNRWA "cannot be replaced and there is no alternative to it."

As the largest humanitarian organization in the Gaza Strip, UNRWA is the backbone of the relief operation there, managing shelters, distributing food, providing health care, and coordinating logistics for humanitarian aid deliveries, according to the statement.

According to the statement, when the war started on Oct. 7, UNRWA expanded its relief operation to include a total of 1.8 million people in the Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank, UNRWA provides assistance and other services to a total of 1.1 million people affected by demolitions, displacement and operations by Israeli forces, said the statement. Enditem
