VIENTIANE, April 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 110,302 people visited northern Laos' Luang Prabang province during the Lao New Year festival in 2024, marking a 364.44 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

Of this number, over 41,400 people were international tourists, according to a report from the Luang Prabang provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department on Thursday.

The largest number of visitors came from China with 10,497, followed by 5,541 from South Korea, 4,284 from Thailand, and 2,843 from Vietnam.

The province received 23,749 domestic and international tourists during the Lao New Year 2023.

The Lao New Year festivities in Luang Prabang in 2024 were organized on a larger scale than in past years, with events taking place from April 10 to 20. The festival was also the highlight of the province's Visit Laos Year program.

Luang Prabang province, some 220 km north of the Lao capital Vientiane, is one of the most well-known provinces in Laos and is a top tourist draw because of its old temples, scenic attractions and rural landscapes.

Luang Prabang was listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a world heritage in 1995.

Luang Prabang province has 228 officially-designated tourist sites, of which 111 are nature-based, 78 are of cultural interest, and 39 have historical associations. Enditem
