LONDON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The power-sharing deal between the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Green Party ended on Thursday amid tensions over the government's climate change targets.

Humza Yousaf, first minister and leader of the SNP, announced that he had formally notified the Green Party co-leaders, Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater, that the power-sharing Bute House Agreement -- which was signed by the two parties following the Holyrood election in 2021 -- had been terminated.

"The Bute House agreement was intended to provide stability to the Scottish government and it has made possible a number of achievements," Yousaf said.

He said recent events have revealed its inability to guarantee stability in parliament. "After careful consideration, I believe... it is in the best interest of the people of Scotland to pursue a different arrangement."

Last week, SNP energy minister confirmed that the Scottish government would abandon its target to cut carbon emissions by 75 percent by 2030, angering the Green members.

The SNP, holding 63 out of 129 seats in the Scottish Parliament (MSP), joined forces in a coalition with the Green Party, which has seven seats, to secure a majority in Holyrood. Both parties support Scottish independence.

In response to the collapse of the power-sharing deal, the Scottish Conservative Party, with 31 MSPs, announced plans to lodge a vote of no confidence in Humza Yousaf. Enditem
