KABUL, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of 5,940 Afghan refugees have returned to homeland from neighboring Pakistan and Iran over recent days, the country's commission on migrants affairs said Friday.

The refugees returned from Pakistan and Iran via the Torkham, Spin Boldak, Islam Qala, Abresham and Angorada border crossing points to Afghanistan, the commission said on social media.

The Pakistani government reportedly started the second phase of sending back Afghan migrants on April 15, and more than 550,000 Afghan refugees returned from Pakistan in the first phase, according to Afghan officials.

Over 2.5 million Afghan refugees have reportedly been living in Pakistan and about the same number are in Iran.

The Afghan caretaker government has been urging Afghan migrants living abroad to return home and contribute to rebuilding their war-ravaged country. Enditem
