YANGON, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Today's youths in Myanmar are increasingly gravitating towards learning Chinese through video-based methods.

This shift is driven by easy access to online language-learning resources, Nanda, while enrolling his children in the Tat Thit Sa Chinese school in Yangon, told Xinhua.

Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and various video sources provide endless possibilities for the learning. People can study anytime, anywhere, taking advantage of the time they spend on their phones. Learning languages through visual media like videos can be highly effective for them, he said.

Aung Thiha Han, 17, said, "I have been studying Chinese since the age of six. In addition to attending Chinese language courses, I supplement my learning by watching YouTube videos and reading."

"I particularly enjoy watching videos because they allow me to observe Chinese pronunciation, speech patterns, and cultural aspects," he said.

"Being surrounded by friends who speak Chinese at school has also motivated me to learn the language," he added.

Khin Khant Khant Khin, aged 9, who is attending the Tat Thit Sa Chinese school, said, "I began learning Chinese when I was five years old. I enjoy watching videos so that I can easily pick up some new words from them."

Htain Htain, 23, said, "I started learning Chinese during the COVID-19 outbreak. My interest in Chinese language, fueled by admiration for Chinese idol Wang Yibo, motivated me to dive into the language."

"I initially learn Chinese through diverse media like watching TikTok and YouTube short clips, and indulging in Chinese animation, alongside Chinese classes," she said.

"Preferring modern movies over traditional martial arts films, I focused on contemporary language for everyday use," she added.

Chuu Thanthar Han is also attending the Tat Thit Sa Chinese school.

"I began learning Chinese at the age of seven. I prefer learning Chinese by watching short videos on TikTok. I am inspired by my older brother's dedication to learning Chinese and I am motivated to follow in his footsteps," the 13-year-old said.

In today's world, Nanda believes it's crucial for young people to go beyond their mother tongue and English. Learning an extra language, he said, like Chinese, may open countless opportunities for the people, no matter they're studying abroad or working at home. Enditem
