TOKYO -- The Japanese yen briefly dropped to a new 34-year low in the 160 level against the U.S. dollar on foreign exchange markets on Monday morning.
It marked the first time since April 1990 that the U.S. dollar has topped the 160 yen line. Monday is a national holiday in Japan, but trading remained very volatile as the Japanese currency began reversing its trajectory in the afternoon, strengthening to the 155 level. (Japan-Yen-Depreciation)

SEOUL -- South Korea's issuance of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) fell in double digits in the first quarter due to lower demand for government-backed mortgage loans, financial watchdog data showed Monday.
The sale of the MBS, issued by the state-run Korea Housing Finance Corp. to securitize mortgage loans, amounted to 5.9 trillion won (4.3 billion U.S. dollars) in the January-March quarter, down 16.3 percent compared with the same quarter of last year, according to the Financial Supervisory Service. WELLINGTON -- The cost of living for the average New Zealand household increased 6.2 percent in the 12 months to the March 2024 quarter, which followed a 7 percent increase in the 12 months to the December 2023 quarter, according to the statistics department Stats NZ on Monday.
The most recent high was 8.2 percent recorded in the 12 months to the December 2022 quarter, as measured by the household living-costs price indexes (HLPIs), which gauge how inflation affects 13 different household groups, plus the average household, on a quarterly basis.
