HARARE, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean police on Tuesday banned labor organizations and workers from holding street marches in commemoration of the International Workers' Day (IWD), which falls on May 1 every year.

"Labor organizations and workers from all parts of the country are expected to gather at various venues to commemorate Workers Day," police said in a statement.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) implores all labor organizations and workers to hold the commemorations in a peaceful manner. In the same vein, the police will not allow any form of toyi-toyi, processions or marching on the streets under the guise of commemorating the Workers Day," it said.

The police said members of the public or workers should go straight to the venues or stadiums where commemorations for the Workers Day will be taking place.

Zimbabwe will on Wednesday join the rest of the world in commemorating IWD, with labor organizations such as the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions expected to hold solidarity gatherings in major cities across the country to mark the Day. Enditem
