BAGHDAD, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Two policemen and an Islamic State (IS) militant were killed on Tuesday in a clash in Iraq's central province of Salahudin, a police source told Xinhua.

A fierce clash erupted between a federal police force and three IS militants in an agricultural area near the town of al-Mutassim in Salahudin, some 100 km north of the capital Baghdad, according to Mohammed al-Bazi from the media office of the provincial police command.

The clash resulted in the deaths of two policemen and an IS militant and the arrest of two others, al-Bazi said.

The police official added that a search operation was conducted in the area, locating three tunnels used by the terrorists and seizing four explosive belts and other equipment.

The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. Enditem
