COLOMBO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Colombo Port will record its best performance in 2024, local media reported on Wednesday, quoting Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Keith D. Bernard.

By the end of the first quarter of 2024, 20-foot equivalent container unit (TEUs) volumes have gone up to 652,766 from 441,032 TEUs at the same time last year, a 48 percent increase compared to the previous year, Bernard said, adding that they expect 1.5 million TUEs by the end of 2024.

The increasing volume of containers and ships is attributed to more ships changing routes to avoid tensions in the southern Red Sea, the newly added infrastructure development in the last eight months, and steps taken to increase productivity, the chairman said.

Colombo is a convenient transit point for convenient access to the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia, he said.

Bernard added that they have ordered 12 large cranes from China to cope with the increased volume of containers and ships. Enditem
