BAGHDAD, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed on Thursday in a car accident in Iraq's southern province of Dhi Qar, a traffic police official said.

Abbas Ali, an official from the traffic police department of Nasiriyah, the provincial capital, said the accident occurred on the main road south of Nasiriah, some 325 km south of Baghdad, when a truck collided with a car carrying the four victims.

He attributed the cause of the accident to high speed and failure to comply with traffic regulations and signals.

In a separate accident, six people were injured in a collision between two cars in the Shaqlawa area near the city of Erbil, the capital of Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, a medical source from Erbil Hospital said on condition of anonymity.

More than 7,000 traffic accidents occurred in 2023 in Iraq, mainly due to deteriorating road conditions, inadequate traffic signals and safety barriers, as well as negligence of traffic rules, according to the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights. Enditem
