COLOMBO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives government on Thursday launched a multi-agency operation to collect biometrics of migrant workers.

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology said the operation aims to "gain 100 percent biometrically confirmed accountability of migrant workers in the Maldives."

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, the Minister of Homeland Security Ali Ihusan said this initiative will address the long-prevailing issue of illegal migrants.

Ihusan said they also want to identify why and how illegal migrants arrive in numbers in the Maldives and come up with a permanent fix to the issue.

The initiative will be completed within three years, he said. Enditem
