RIO DE JANEIRO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Substitute Eduardo Vargas scored a late brace as Atletico Mineiro recovered from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 against Fluminense in Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday.

Fluminense took the lead in the fourth minute through Argentine striker German Cano, who slid home from close range following Marquinhos' cross.

Former Brazil international midfielder Renato Augusto equalized just after the hour when he latched onto Alexsander's through ball and slotted a low finish past goalkeeper Everson.

Vargas, a 73rd-minute substitute for Hulk, reduced the deficit just 10 seconds after his introduction with a first-time effort into the far corner following Igor Gomes' perfectly weighted pass.

Chile international forward Vargas put his side on level terms six minutes later by meeting Guilherme Arana's cross with a glancing header at the near post.

"Even though we managed to get a point the players were disappointed because they know that they can do better," Atletico manager Gabriel Milito told reporters.

"I like that. A draw means that you've lost the chance to pick up two more points. If we maintain this attitude, I'm confident that our performances will improve."

The result at Kleber Andrade stadium in Cariacica, Espirito Santo state, leaves Atletico Mineiro with nine points from five outings, four points ahead of Fluminense.

Earlier on Saturday, Bruno Henrique scored a late equalizer as Flamengo drew 1-1 at Bragantino. Enditem
