China dominates opening day at WTT Saudi Smash 2024

JEDDAH, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese table tennis team on Saturday showcased formidable strength on the first day of WTT Saudi Smash 2024 as all six players secured victories.

In the men's singles, Lin Gaoyuan made a swift start by sweeping aside Saudi player Abdulaziz Bu Shulaybi 11-4, 11-2, 11-5.

Liang Jingkun delivered an equally impressive performance, denying any chance to the 37-year-old Austrian veteran Daniel Habesohn, ranked 54th in the world, with a comfortable win 11-5, 11-2, 11-6.

Following closely, Lin Shidong engaged in a fierce battle against Swedish player Truls Moregard, ranked 18th. Despite the intensity, Lin Shidong maintained composure to win 11-4, 11-9, 11-13, 11-5.

The current world number one, Wang Chuqin, demonstrated his formidable prowess by defeating French ace Simon Gauzy 11-5, 11-2, 11-6. Wang's powerful play and skillful handling of crucial moments earned him thunderous applause from the audience.

In the women's singles, Wang Manyu faced little resistance against the 34th-ranked Thai player Orawan Paranang, securing a commanding victory in 11-4, 11-5, 11-6. Meanwhile, Chen Meng also delivered a dominant performance against Romanian Adina Diaconu, with 11-5, 12-10, 11-3.

The WTT Saudi Smash, the second major tournament of 2024, features 64 players in the men's and women's singles categories and 24 pairs in the men's and women's doubles, as well as mixed doubles. Enditem
