LOS ANGELES, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Universal Pictures' action comedy film "The Fall Guy" topped the North American box office with an estimated cume of 28.5 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, figures from data firm Comscore showed Sunday.

Inspired by the hit 1980s TV series and directed by David Leitch, the film follows an out-of-work stuntman, who has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among others.

The film has earned an approval rating of 83 percent based on 251 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and an "A-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

To celebrate the film's 25th anniversary, George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace," the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, returned to theaters this weekend for its 25th anniversary. The 1999's film generated 8.08 million dollars in second place on the North American box office chart.

Rounding out the Top 3, Amazon MGM Studios' romantic sports film "Challengers" took in 7.6 million on its second weekend for a North American cume of 29.5 million dollars through Sunday. Enditem
