LIMA, May 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed when a passenger bus veered off the road and overturned in the predawn hours of Monday in southern Peru's Puno region, local media reported.

The interprovincial bus, operated by a company called Transportes Turismo Universal, was traveling along the Puno-Cusco route when the accident occurred around 2:00 a.m. local time, state-run news agency Andina reported.

The head of the Puno Highway Police, David Sota Paredes, told Radio Programas del Peru that the bus was headed to the city of Cusco with 24 passengers on board.

Among the victims was a six-month-old baby, the National Police was quoted as saying.

State-run TV Peru Noticias said the injured, including some with serious injuries, were taken to the San Juan de Dios Ayaviri Hospital and a clinic in the district of Santa Rosa for treatment.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Enditem
