ULAN BATOR, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia observed its National Tree Planting Day, the country's largest tree-planting and nature care event, on Saturday.
"Among many ways to combat climate change, planting trees is the most effective one. Planting trees is something that everyone can do for themselves, their loved ones, and to contribute to creating a better world," Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh said at the launching ceremony of the National Tree Planting Day here.
On this day, citizens, public and private organizations across the country are planting trees in their yards and surroundings and taking care of the previously planted ones.
As part of the tree-planting day's framework, various activities are organized, including exhibitions of tree seedlings, forest excursions to experience their fragrances, and training sessions on tree planting and care.
In October 2021, Mongolia launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign, aiming to plant at least 1 billion trees by 2030, as Khurelsukh informed the United Nations General Assembly.
Desertification, exacerbated by climate change, is the primary cause of the increasing frequency of yellow dust storms in Mongolia, according to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
Despite Mongolia's vast land area, only 8 percent is now covered by forests. Enditem
