RIO DE JANEIRO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Athletico Paranaense showed their Brazilian Serie A title credentials on Sunday with a 2-0 away win over reigning champions Palmeiras.
Palmeiras squandered a chance to take the lead when Brazil international midfielder Raphael Veiga missed a penalty attempt after Endrick was tripped by Bento Krepski.
Paranaenese forward Pablo Teixeira made the hosts pay four minutes later with a rasping free-kick.
Paraguay international defender Gustavo Gomez gifted the visitors a second goal by inadvertently turning the ball into his own net just before the hour.
Paranaenese were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute as defender Lucas Esquivel was shown a second yellow card for a bad challenge on Endrick.
But the Curitiba outfit survived a tense final half hour to clinch their fourth win of the campaign. Cuca's men lead the 20-team standings with 13 points from six outings, ahead of second-placed Bahia on goal difference. Palmeiras are eighth with eight points so far.
In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Sunday, Cruzeiro won 1-0 at Atletico Goianiense, Botafogo drew 1-1 at Fortaleza, Vasco da Gama prevailed 2-1 at home to Vitoria, and Bahia edged to a 1-0 home win over Bragantino. Enditem
