KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Xinhua) -- A total of 8.94 million jobs were recorded during the first quarter of this year in Malaysia, marking the highest level since 2018, official data showed Wednesday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement the number of jobs rose 1.5 percent during the first quarter as compared to 8.81 million a year ago.

Meanwhile, job vacancies during this quarter edged down by 0.4 percent year-on-year to 191,900.

According to the DOSM, the growth in the number of jobs indicated that the labor demand in Malaysia is likely to remain strong in 2024, as Malaysia's economy is predicted to expand at a quicker rate of 4 to 5 percent due to strong external demand and greater investment. Enditem
