LOS ANGELES, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Paramount Pictures' fantasy comedy film "IF" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 35 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
Directed by John Krasinski, the film stars Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming. The plot follows a girl who discovers that she can see everyone's imaginary friends -- and what she does with that superpower -- as she embarks on a magical adventure.
The film has earned an approval rating of 49 percent based on 140 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Disney and 20th Century Studios' sci-fi film "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" slipped to second on its second weekend, generating 26 million dollars for a North American cume that now tops 101 million dollars after ten days in release.
Rounding out the Top 3, horror film "The Strangers: Chapter 1" produced by Lionsgate opened to a weekend debut of 12 million dollars. Enditem
