KAMPALA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has sent a message of condolences to the government and people of Iran following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and several others in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, Museveni said he could see a patriot in Raisi who died prematurely, together with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others killed in the helicopter crash.

"We could easily see that Raisi was a dedicated worker and unifier for his country and for the tri-continental struggle for justice by Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the peace-loving people of Europe," said Museveni in a statement, also posted on his social media X handle, formerly Twitter. "Small things could even show this."

"When he visited us recently, we finished the government bilateral functions late, as dusk was gathering. However, he insisted on going to the suburbs at night to visit the pro-people projects Iran had constructed," Museveni said, referring to Raisi's Uganda trip in July 2023.

According to Iran's state-run IRIB TV, Raisi was killed when a helicopter carrying him and other officials was forced into a hard landing due to bad weather in Iran's northwestern province of East Azerbaijan. Enditem
