KHARTOUM, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders, or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), announced on Sunday that one of its employees was killed in Sudan's El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur State.

The employee, a watchman at the MSF pharmacy, was killed on Saturday "when shelling hit his house, which was located close to the city's main market," the MSF said in a press release.

"He was taken straight to South Hospital for treatment, but sadly passed away from his injuries," it said, noting that many of its staff lost family members or their homes during the shelling as well.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the MSF had treated more than 930 patients in El Fasher's South Hospital since the fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) two weeks ago, according to the press release.

The death toll in the fighting has reached at least 123, showing the intensity of the violence, the MSF said, urging the warring parties to do more to protect civilians.

The El Fasher fighting is part of a larger conflict that has gripped Sudan since April 15, 2023. Clashes between the SAF and the RSF have claimed an estimated 15,550 lives and displaced 8.8 million people nationwide, according to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on May 15.
