Vietnam's CPI up 4.03 pct in 5 months

HANOI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's consumer price index (CPI) in the first five months of this year went up by 4.03 percent year on year, as the country's core inflation rose 2.78 percent, according to data released by the General Statistics Office on Wednesday.

Compared to April, the index grew by 0.05 percent in May, contributed by price hikes for seven out of the 11 items in the calculation basket.

Items posting the most significant price hikes in May included food and restaurants with a 0.38-percent increase, housing and construction materials with also 0.38 percent, entertainment and tourism with 0.31 percent, according to the office.

Vietnam's CPI in the first quarter from January to March went up by 3.77 percent year on year, said the office.

Vietnam has set the target of keeping the CPI under 4-4.5 percent for 2024. Enditem
